The changing face of medical professionalism and the impact of COVID-19
The Lancet 23 February 2021 https://doi.org/10.1016/S0140-6736(21)00436-0
  • In an article in The Lancet, Professor Andrew Goddard, president of the Royal College of Physicians, discusses the tensions that COVID-19 has placed on medical professionalism and physician wellbeing. He argues that there is an urgent need for a system-level approach to address the issues that COVID-19 has created to better protect and safeguard the medical workforce for the future. The wellbeing initiatives that have been introduced for clinicians need to be combined with organisational interventions including flexible working arrangements, enhanced teamwork, reductions in administrative burdens, and optimal use of technology.

NHS Staff and Learners' Mental Wellbeing Report

NHS Staff and Learners' Mental Wellbeing Report
Health Education England February 2019
  • As part of Health Education England’s health and care workforce strategy, the NHS Staff and Learners’ Mental Wellbeing Commission set out to discover and review evidence of good practices for the mental health and wellbeing of staff and learners in NHS organisations. The Commission has examined successful interventions from around the country, to identify what has worked well and what could be adopted widely. The final report makes a number of recommendations which will be considered as part of the Workforce Development Plan outlined in the Long Term Plan.
  • The report makes 33 recommendations including:
    • 1. Establish a board level NHS Workforce Wellbeing Guardian in every NHS organisation
    • 2. All NHS organisations appoint a Workplace Wellbeing Leader to work with and report to the Workforce Wellbeing Guardian.
    • 5. Healthcare providers (such as GP practices, hospitals, and care home operators) on a local (STP or ICS) footprint should create a schools’ work experience bureau service.
    • 23. A national charter should be developed, working with patient groups, clinical professionals and their representative bodies, and regulators of the professions that seeks to examine the way that reflections, complaints and comments from patients and the public are handled in the NHS.

Framework for Improving Joy in Work

IHI Framework for Improving Joy in Work. [Free registration required]
IHI White Paper. Institute for Healthcare Improvement; 2017
  • This white paper is intended to serve as a guide for health care organizations to engage in a participative process where leaders ask colleagues at all levels of the organization, “What matters to you?” — enabling them to better understand the barriers to joy in work, and co-create meaningful, high-leverage strategies to address these issues.
  • The white paper describes the following:
    • The importance of joy in work (the “why”);
    • Four steps leaders can take to improve joy in work (the “how”);
    • The IHI Framework for Improving Joy in Work: nine critical components of a system for ensuring a joyful, engaged workforce (the “what”);
    • Key change ideas for improving joy in work, along with examples from organizations that helped test them; and
    • Measurement and assessment tools for gauging efforts to improve joy in work.
