This sets out the facts about government’s progress in preparing the NHS and social care for the COVID-19 outbreak, with a focus on:

• actions set out in the 17 March letter to the NHS, and the 15 April action plan for adult social care. It also describes what is currently known about additional funding for health and adult social care;
• actions taken at a national level by those responsible for coordinating health, adult social care and local government in England; and
• the period from the start of the outbreak to at least the end of April, when the government announced that the UK was “past the peak”.

• Ongoing initiatives include a review of local government's information sharing standards, and a data maturity self assessment tool.

• This project sought to identify how the power of data could be harnessed to understand the experiences of children when they come into contact with social services and to evaluate the effectiveness of the interventions made.
• A key insight from the research was that people tend to engage with and better understand data portrayed as a map. Dynamic maps that show movement present a great deal of information in a more accessible and impactful form and were found to be an effective way to gain a clear picture of children’s journeys through the social care system.

• "Local Digital" is a nation-wide movement to support the delivery of excellent digital local public services. 
• The Local Digital Declaration is a shared ambition for the future of local public services written by a collective of local authorities, sector bodies and government departments which aims "to co-create the conditions for the next generation of local public services, where technology is an enabler rather than a barrier to service improvements, and services are a delight for citizens and officials to use."
• At the launch (4 July 2018) over 50 local authorities, government departments and partner organisations had already signed up to the "digital pledge", agreeing a common vision for the future of local services.
